I searched for hours to find this spot about an hour south of Winton.

It was November 2020 and it was hot. 44 degrees in the shade.

In the never ending search for subjects to paint I came across this dried up creek bed. It was located near an old sheep station long since abandoned. As I stood there looking around the old shearing shed I couldn't help but think they must have been out of their minds trying to run a sheep station out here in such hot and arid conditions.

Hoping to find some water in the old creek bed I started walking up it.

It took a good forty minutes of searching when I eventually came to this little billabong. By the looks of it they had used this as a dam, channeling the water off from the main creek.

The search was worth it. This scene has been the subject of a number of paintings now that have found new homes.

It's an interesting area around Winton.

Banjo Patterson, the great Australian poet, wrote Waltzing Matilda not far from here.

And the ill-fated Bourke and Wills passed by in their quest to find the gulf.
