I recently took a trip to the Bundaberg Art Gallery to see the Joe Furlonger exhibition. Joe is a favourite of mine when it comes to abstract landscapes.
While at the exhibition I watched a video of Joe talking about his artwork and practice. In the video they showed footage of when he took a plein air group up to Mt Perry to do some plein air painting. That was it ... I had to go.
I found the exact spot from the video at the lookout just before you enter town. Amazing views across to Mt Perry and the township below.
I set up eager to paint the view before me then I looked across the mountain range. A huge rain storm was blowing straight at me. I painted furiously until it hit then packed everything in a hurry into the car. Ten minutes later blue skies :)
This repeated itself a number of times until I had a decent start on the painting.
It was finished of in the studio the next day.
Mt Perry was once a thriving gold mining town with a population of 3,500. Today sadly its more like 300.
