"Mary's Long Winding Journey"
20" x 28"
Oil on Canvas
The Mary River is a subject that keeps drawing me back to her.
She originates near Lansborough on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, and winds her way through the Mary Valley past Kenilworth and Gympie before eventually making it to the ocean just to the north east of Maryborough.
In parts her embankments are steep and heavily lined with trees. In other areas she has flattened out the land around her in sandy flood planes bordered by distant mountains.
She brings life and possibility to the farms and familys living near by, and a weekend destination for weary suburban folk looking for an escape from the grind.
She brings despair to those whose lives she turns upside down when she floods.
In the end Mary will do as Mary does as she makes her long and winding journey.
